I am pregnant with my first child. I have a British passport but was not born in the UK. If my child is born in Turkey, would the baby be automatically eligible for a British passport?

do not listen to cokecan-ever

if one of the parents is a british citizen the child will be a british citizen no matter where the child is born. period.

as far as if the child is entitled to the turkish citizenship I cannot help you since you've only disclosed so much information. I suggest you check with the Turkish authorities.

Dear Turkishamercan she is asking "if baby was born in Turkey" ; and if father is Turkish and if marriage recognised by Turkish authorities baby will be automatically Turkish citizen.

This does not mean that they cant have dual citizenship.

I anly comment from Turkish side.

cokecan the question is "will the baby be british" there is nothing about getting a Turkish citizenship or a dual citizenship. There is also nothing about the father being Turkish.

I suggest you read the posts more carefully

I believe he's actually right. My friend is British by descent, but born outside of the UK and her son can't get a British passport.

You should give a birth in U.K otherwise the baby won't be British. I am sure because you were born in Turkey.

Look, I am not sure if I am 100% correct here, but I think most of you except TurkishAmerican, have been giving the wrong information.

The question was firstly about British citizenship and nothing about Turkish citizenship. We do not even know if the father is Turkish or not.

I can only assume that the british policy closely follows the American. So if it is anything like the American way, then you baby should be eligible for citizenship. Best thing is to contact your British High Commission in Turkey and talk to them about it.

I am an American citizen married to a Turkish woman, we had our baby in Germany. The baby was eligible for automatic American Citizenship, because I as an American citizen had also lived in the US for at least 5 years after the age of 14. If my wife had been American also, then regardless if we had lived in the US for at least 5 years after the age of 14 or not, the baby would automatically be an American Citizen. As it stands, our daughter has American, Turkish and German citizenship.

Perhaps the biritish system is also the same. I cannot say, but I am sure your baby is eligible for British citizenship even though the baby won't be born in The UK.

has your friend actually ever lived in the UK? If not, that may be the reason why the son was not eligible for a UK passport. Also the son can go for a british passport through the grand parents, it does not always have to be through the parents.
