If you do have Turkish citizenship, please tell me a) if you have any regrets and b) what the benefits have been (other than being rid of the residency permit hassles)?

If you don't have Turkish citizenship and are eligible, what are your reasons for not applying (other than military service)?

I am getting a lot of pressure from my husband's family but so far cannot think of any good reason to get Turkish citizenship, so if those of you that are eligible for it can give me any insight, I would appreciate it.

Thanks.

About me:
I am a US citizen, married to a dual US-Turk citizen, and the mother of two dual US-Turk citizens.
The deed to my home is in my name and my husband's name.
I work for a Turkish company that has handled all of my work permit paperwork and costs for the past 4 years.

My in-laws have limited levels of education and in my many years of being their gelin, have never given me reason to question their intentions. I think they just think it would be nice (and easier) if I became a citizen.

My husband has likewise given me no reason to consider divorce, but could you elaborate on the impact citizenship would have in a divorce proceeding? Thanks.

No reason to get citizenship if you ask me. My personal situation is different in that I would lose my original (German) passport if I applied for the Turkish one, thus, totally unacceptable, but if I were you I still wouldn't get a Turkish one.

The main reason I see is that if you are a dual citizen, your US consulate cannot really support you in a pinch, because you are also a Turkish citizen. Unless your company pressures you and refuses to jump through the work permit hoop any longer (and if you are very attached to your job) - don't do it.

As a Turkish citizen, you can travel to Iran without getting a visa.

:) if that's useful!

Since writing this post I have met two women who had different experiences that made them decide to go for the citizenship,

The first woman's Turkish husband died and her in-laws fought to deny her any inheritance. She says that if she had been Turkish, her inheritance rights would never have been questioned.

The second woman divorced her Turkish husband and lost custody of her children. Of course, there may be other reasons why a court would grant custody of the children to the father, but she claims it was because a) she was not Turkish and b) she was not Muslim.

Anyone else have experiences like this?

Being able to go to Iran doesn't really do it for me, but thanks anyway.

I'm English/Irish. Married for years to TR hubby, got two sons.We moved to TR after a couple of years, it was planned we would. I refused TR nationality on marriage ( it was offered in those days) but years later I decided to apply for it. The reason was that back then there weren't any pension schemes available in TR to nonTurks and I couldn't afford to contribute to the UK one. I was determined to have my own retirement pension. It took a year from the date of application til I got TR citizenship and I immediately started paying in to a pension fund.
I'm pleased I became Turkish. I have no regrets. I gained more than I lost. Our sons are dual. For British people it's not a big issue except for men marrying Turkish women then the military obligation is a worry. Our boys were in TR from a young age so knew they'd have to do the army time. Apart from that at least Brits are not obliged to choose one or the other nationality as some nations are.
My other half and his family never put any pressure on me. It was my decision .
One strange aspect was that the police made me take a TR name which was added to my own names. I was always happy to just use my husband's surname , without adding my own maiden name. This choosing and adding a TR first name according to some people is not the law but my other half went to Ankara and tried hard to get my application thru' without the blinking T name but we couldn't manage it! Grrrr! So I am actually stuck w/it! In some places it's quite handy actually- banks, when visiting kids' schools, official TR documents, tapus, contracts, internet shopping in TR etc
We are planning to get it removed by a court when the laws are changed. It's not possible right now.
I'm actually at the age and stage when I'm passed caring, I've got too much else going on to be bothered thinking about it all!
In the end I'm glad I did what I did, no regrets! MasALLAH.
I hope you can do what's right for you- that's all that matters. Good luck.
