'Round here, jewelry is oft sold based on weight; most vendors throw their wares on a scale, consult a magic calculator, and make up a price. You might do well to check the weight and compare rates. Labor is generally undervalued (in my opinion) and silver is remarkably inexpensive. Of course, expect prices in that resort town to be theme-park/theater popcorn scaled.

Prices in Turkey are stupidly high compared to India and Dubai, where I've also shopped for jewellery.
Most gold is (I think - look it up) 58% gold, as it's 14karat. That means that if the price of gold is 50 lira per gram and you want a piece which is 2 grams, you must spend 100 lira if the piece is 24karat gold, and 58 lira if the piece is 14 karat gold.
On top of that, you are also paying for:
1. the other metal
2. the mixing of the metals - white gold is harder to make than plain
3. the labour of making the piece
4. wholesale and retail mark ups
5. tax (18%, I think, but I'm not sure).

If a piece is machine made, you'll pay almost nothing for labour. Hand-made pieces are very expensive. Labour costs about 10-20 lira for a hand-made wedding ring in India; in Turkey it's about 80 lira (so they say!) and in Canada it's about 200 lira.

*snip* Hand-made pieces are very expensive.

1) The 'other metal' is typically copper, zinc, nickel, or silver- all of negligible cost.
2) 'White Gold' -by definition (less than 14 Kt.) isn't gold- and is as difficult to make as weak tea.
3) Labor costs in Turkey are some of the lowest in the Industrial world. I can have hand fabricated (not cast) work done by a local jeweler for an inconsequential amount compared with, say, the US.

High prices are voluntary- and oft are indicative of a secondary product being purchased- such as status/prestige. Value is highly subjective.

On 17th March, jlamperd asked about buying jewllery, saying that he/she normally buys in Fethiye.

The suggestion for shopping in Istanbul however insightful is therefore not very useful to someone at the other end of the country

It is more thread blossoming than thread drift. The advice may have broader appeal than the confines of the query that inspired it- and is vastly more on topic/productive than critiquing contributions.

If your looking for gold jewelries, Turkey is the place where quality-based and inexpensive gold jewelries be found.
When buying gold jewelries, one must consider the karat of gold. Try buying the ones with 12-18 karat gold. If the piece is less than 10-k, it cannot be considered as gold.

Hello,

Yes maenad is right that jewelery prices in turkey quite high in comparison to other countries.so i think you have to take one experienced person with you when you go for shopping and see the weight and then go ahead.

good luck!!
