Hi all! So glad to have found this forum. I hope that someone here can help me with a few questions that I have. I'll start with this one:
I am an American woman engaged to a Turkish man. I've been reading as much as I can find about requirements for marriage, and eventual US citizenship. I plan to visit Turkey soon and my fiance wants us to marry then. We are ok with residing in Turkey but I think I will eventually want to return to the US because I have family here. Which is simpler, least expensive, and least complicated legally: marrying in Turkey or marrying in the US?
Thanks in advance for any advice.

Daria, did you get married yet?

if not.. and still searching for information .. here are some thoughts.. either is fine, but probably simpler to marry in Turkey.. Either country accepts the other's marriage certificates obtained through the city hall.

Getting married in America is also doable, probably more expensive depending on the number of people you want to invite to wedding. :) Once there, if he needs to work etc.. he would need to get a green card, you will need to sponsor, but i believe there is certain time durations must be spent as married before he can be granted the card. It is not automatically given.

As far as daily life, Turkey is beautiful, with rich culture and history. Comparing to America, still cheaper to live in, although cost of living is slowly catching up. For example, if foreign products purchased in Turkey, you will find them to be typically 3 times more expensive then America, so the vendor can cover the import costs and taxes etc000. On the other hand, food is much cheaper in Turkey. Gas in Turkey probably 3 times more expensive, so is Internet, cellphones, or anything technology related.

Good luck, hope everything works out as you would hope,

Thank you Dawn for your reply. We have not yet married. An attorney advised that we marry in the US for my benefit. I am familiar with the cost of living in Turkey and the imported costs of items. Fortunately I will have an income from the US that will offset the costs in Turkey, making us very comfortable. I appreciate the information that you provided. It is helpful.

If you get married in the USA, your marriage is need to be recognized by Turkish government. By the way keep in mind, if you were married before, there must be at least 300 days before you get married. Otherwise you marriage can not be recognized by Turkey.

Thank you for your reply. If we marry in the US, do you know what is needed to verify the marriage to Turkey?

If you get married in the USA you should inform the nearest Turkish consulate about your marriage by presenting your marriage certificate and its translation.

If you are ready to marry Turkish fiance then you can marry in the USA.
It must be recognized by the Turkish government.

It looks like we'll be marrying by the end of this year, probably in Turkey. American requirements are sticky mostly because immigration is a huge issue right now. I'm planning to visit my fiance' in Izmir at the end of the year ... he says he's waited long enough (g) and wants to marry then. I was married before and was widowed so I'm assuming I should provide Turkey with a death certificate? Would I need anything else? We will reside in Turkey and we're hoping to open a small Cafe there.
If we should decide to move to the states, will I need to prove my marriage to the US? and what will I need?
Thanks for all of you who have so kindly replied to me.
