I stopped just short of finishing my Ph.D. in primate behavior, studying free-ranging monkeys in Latin America. I think all primate "pets" should be highly illegal. I worked with wild howler monkeys, which are similar in size to macaques. We darted them for tagging/weighing/measuring purpo...

I don't know any shelters in your area, but I've volunteered to do clean-up at a couple of shelters in Istanbul, and they welcome volunteers. I'd guess fewer than 1 in 1000 shelter dogs here ever get adopted. Most live on a diet of stale moldy bread for years in group housing. When the mayor changes...

Weren't you the same person "looking to adopt" a dog five days ago?

Is this a dog you adopted and want to get rid of? Or are you trying to ditch this dog so you can get a different dog?

I was under the impression that cremation was more or less "illegal" in Muslim countries. I read recently that one reason Turkey has been kept out of the EU is because they refused to provide a cremation facility for humans who would like that option. So I doubt they have a pet cremation f...

I've flown over 20 international flights with dogs and cats, but never into the EU, so can't be much help. However, I know tons of adoptable dogs in rescues here are flown to new homes in the EU. So it can definitely be done from Turkey. All vets here can supply a pet passport (has a green cover), g...

A labradoodle is an F1 (first generation) mix of a poodle and a Labrador retriever. It is NOT hypoallergenic. Most shed as much as Labs, and the best of them will still shed somewhere between a Lab (high-shedding) and Poodle (negligible). These dogs have all the high-maintainence coats of a Poodle, ...

It's very important to note that most Turkish dog owners (and parents) OVER-DRESS their pets (and children) to the point of suffocation. Medium or long-haired dogs do NOT need a coat above 0 C. In fact, dressing these dogs above about 5 degrees = "abuse." Dogs already have fur coats. Most ...

Hi Bursa-ites, I'm an American who has lived in Anatolian Istanbul for 3 1/2 years with my Turkish husband. I used to have a lot of friends back when I taught English, but they have all since moved back to America. Since then, I have been telecommuting online for an American company, so I don't have...

Rik,

We just offered to buy a blue-plate car from a fellow foreigner today, to take possession next week. Why wouldn't you do this type of transaction again?

My husband and I sold our car a few months ago for ecological reasons, but have recently decided that 100% public transportation is not for us. We're looking to buy a reliable, economical used car from 2007 or later in Istanbul. We will consider any brand, and either normal or blue plates are fine. ...

I got a Kindle during a trip to the U.S. a few months ago. I bought my first book while still in the U.S.--could that be the difference? I'm also signed in on Amazon as being "in" the U.S. and I pay with a U.S. credit card. Here in Turkey, I continue to buy about a book a week with no prob...

Let me get this straight... you have a Hyacinth macaw... 4 months old... who has been a pet its "whole life"? And you no longer have time for it? How did you get this parrot? You shouldn't even be able to buy a parrot until it's weaned, and Hyacinth aren't weaned until 4 months old. So hav...

To the original poster... your poor dog "only needs to go out TWO times a day" ?????? Why are Turks somehow convinced that dogs only need to go outdoors once or twice a day??? People frequently call or e-mail me asking if their dog is abnormal because they have to take it out 2-3 times a d...
