If I sail into a Turkish harbour under a foreign flag then no problem. But what if I have a boat transported here from another country?

There is an excellent web page on boat rules but nothing on whether or not tax/duties are to be paid on a boat, foreign flagged, delivered rather than sailed into a port.

Any experience on this?

Hi,

I do not the rules for bringing a boat into Turkey. I have bought my boat in Turkey 2 years ago, from a turkish man and with a turkish flag.

- you need a resience permit

- you need a tax number

- you have to go to notary for the sale

- you have to go to the harbour authorities to make you registered as the new owner.

- the harbour captain will give to you list of requested safety equipments inside the boat.

- twice a year, in january and july you will have to pay a special tax like for cars (banderola) For a 8,5m boat for instance it is arounf 500 YTL each time.

If it is a second hand boat, before buying :

- go with the seller to the tax administration to check if the previous taxes have been paid (you become responsible for late payments after the sale).

-go also with the seller to the harbour administration to check if all safety controls are up to date and if there is no problem with the boat.

Thanks Gerard

Lets say I boat the boat in Antalya but will be keeping it in Kas. Do I have to register the ownership changes withe the harbourmaster in Kas or Antalya. Also what sort of marina costs do you pay in Finike.

cheers

I think - but not sure - that you first have to make the change of ownership in the harbour where the boat is registered (Antalya I suppose), then you go to Kas harbour and ask fot the transfer of your ship from Antalya to Kas.

It is not compulsory to transfer the boat registeration from Antalya to Kas but if your boat stays in Kas it will be easier probably to have it registered in Kas.

In Finike I pay around 1000 YTL per year to Setur Marina.

Hi,

Has anyone any idea of the pros and cons between buying a boat in Turkey and then registering it on a foreign (english) flag or, alternatively, registering on a Turkish flag and paying the taxes?

Hi,

Turkish flag disadvantages

- you pay annual tax

- you have to strictly comply with the turkish regulations on safety equipments, turkish formalities - and they control if you do - If you have a foreign flag, english for instance, you are supposed to comply with the english regulations, but as long as your boat is in Turkey, nobody cares if you do or not.

Turkish flag advantage: you can sell your boat to a turkish citizen without import duties. If you have a foreign flag you can sell only to a foreign citizen; to sell to a turkish one you have to make all import formalities and pay import duties.

I have no experience in buying with turkish flag and after changing in an english one, but it must be a lot hassle:I think english authorities will request an inspection of the boat to check saftey regulations compliance + export-import formalities...

Hi,

The issue is this:

I am having the boat built in Turkey (because it is much cheaper here and I live here) and it will have a CE certificate (so it complies with European safety standards) and all the taxes associated with the production (i.e. KDV) will have been paid.

I then have two options, either I can register normally under a Turkish flag (and be liable to the "normal" taxes the biggest of which is the annual tax on the motor) or register it under a British flag (in the Small Ships Register which is very easy and can be done online for a fee of GBP25).

What I am not sure about, but am slowly finding out about, is which is most advantageous or, more realistically, which is less disadvantageous!!

Bryn, you can see most of the rules about bringing a boat to Turkey on http:\www,allaboutturkey,com/boatrules.htm

If I can help any more - let me know,

John

Is the tax on the boat of the engine. I am looking at a 7mtr turkish registered sailing boat with a 9.9hp outboard, I understand that engines under 10hp are tax exempt so does this mean the boat is tax exempt, can anyone confirm.

Hi,

Yes, it is my understanding that the tax is on the engine but you do need to register the boat with the belediye. The tax is based on the engine size and age with engines under 10hp being tax exempt.

You can find the actual 2007 rates at http:\www,netbul,com/superstar/ozeldosyalar/finans/oto_vergi/index.asp

under "yat...."

So, for instance the tax in 2007 on a new 75hp engine is 75 x 32.90ytl i.e.2,467.50ytl - I know because, if I don't find another way, that is what I will pay! So, to calculate any size of engine you pick the appropriate hp row together with the appropriate age column and multiply the figure in the box by the hp.

You can also see all the tax rates for cars on this page.

Hi all, can I ask your advice on the following.

I bought a US flaged sail boat here in Bodrum last November and I want to import some elctronics (chartplotter, radios etc.)for installation on the boat from the USA. Now, eveything I have found says I can do that without paying KDV/OTV, but I just know there is a catch somewhere-somehow. Does anyone have any expereince of doing this. frankly, it's just that the savings are so great when buying from the US these days it will still be worth it to me if I have to pay a bit for Customs Clearance etc. Appreciate any advice you can offer.

Manyt thanks

Bob

Hi John

I was just reading your post there about what flag to put your boat on. I had the same question a few months ago while I was looking to buy a boat here in Turkey where many attractive ones were for sale, but with the TC flag. Everyone I spoke to for advice said, and one of them a friend who is in the Turkish yachting business, avoid buying a Turkish flagged boat due to the taxes and the impact of potential changes in the laws in the future. In my case the boat I eventually bought was already registered in Delaware so I simply set up a company there, and with a 'Bill of Sale' which I drew up between the seller (who is a Turk) sent it on and changed the boats name and re-registered it in the States. No Notars, lawyers required- although I was very careful in researching full ownership etc. before paying any monies.

Another advantage I can see in having outside of Turkey, as I hope it will be; is this option to be able to import spares and parts for the boat KDV/OTV exempt. As I am asking on this forum, I have yet to find out how to best do this but it was something that I thought about when I kept it on the US Flag. Anyway. good luck with whatever option you choose.

Bob
